No-one goes into a clothes shop because of the name. They go in because of the display in the window and the layout and products inside. If they come out as happy customers, they'll see the name on the shopping bag and that might be the first time they know what the shop's called. So the key is to have a name that reflects the style you aim to sell and the type of customer you want to clothe, and matches with the theme and layout of the store and its key differences from every other store and then reminds them of that experience. Tell us about those and we'll suggest names.

The name doesn't need to be catchy. As Saul points out, it's more about how customers feel than it is about how clever you can be with the name.

Tell us more about your prospective customers. Where do they live? How old are they? How do they decide where to shop for clothes? What's important to them? How is your shop different from, and better than, wherever they shop now?

Why does this name have to be catchy?
  • Posted by zohairshad on Author
The name has to be catchy so that it creates curiosity in the minds of customers , which leads to more walk ins and thus more conversions in sale.

About my prospective customers, they're aged about 18-50 and ideally from the middle income and higher income levels of the society.
    What's important to a customer??
Is the price, latest trends of the fashion world , durability of the fabric etc.

My store will be similar or same to our competition in regards to our product line and thus the name and brand should stand out

If your store is similar or the same as competition there is no reason to visit your store. Your only point of competitive advantage becomes the price - in which case your business name should be "The fashion warehouse" or "Discount clothing." Visit your competitors for each write down what makes that competitor unique. Now find a gap between the competitors.

Your target customers have to be much more than 18-50 (what a wide range of life-views!) middle to higher. What occasion are they buying for - for work, for leisure, for sport, for wedding. What image do your customers have of themselves and their aspirations - New York business, French chic, Skate style, Grunge music, Hip-hop, outdoor leisure, coffee-time comfort, slack and relax... An 18 year old will not want the same clothes as a 40-50 year old - does fabric durability matter to an 18 year old the same way as a 40 year old for instance? These groups tend not to want the same in-store experience (eg music, lighting, colours). The clearer you are on the style and type of customers the better your business proposition. Until you have this a name is just unimportant and forgettable. And most clothes shops are abstract names that only become valuable once the store proves to be popular - Zara, Mango, Chanel, Macy's, H&M, M&S, Gap, TJMaxx - none are catchy and none have a clothing related meaning!

So if you want a name 'Happy Clothes', 'Prettyfaces', 'Clothes Trader', 'Modern Women', but you have to get the business positioning and focus right first - the name otherwise isn't important.
