Seeking Great Online Tool For Naming A New Company

Posted by katia on 50 Points
I'd like to work remotely/virtually with a team to create the best name for a startup. I'm sure there are many "naming" and "branding" online tools available. Can you recommend an easy, effective, affordable tool that you might have used recently with success? I would be most grateful.

There are many tools that generate random names, if that's what you're looking for.
If you're looking to create the best name, then it's a lot more work than looking at lists of names. You'll want to clearly identify what you're offering, to who, your competitive advantage, etc. (elements of your marketing plan). Once you have that, you can have a metric of how well various names match your specific needs. Otherwise, you'll simply pick a favorite name from a big list and hope that it's the best.

Email, PowerPoint, videoconferencing, and maybe Excel. It's not so much the tools as it is the people and clear, honest communication.

Sorry, readers apparently didn't understand my question. Thanks for your efforts. I am asking for an intelligent online tool to create a corporate name by employing classic branding methodologies. I have led branding processes and participated in branding processes. I am simply inquiring whether there exists a technological program to facilitate that creative process in a shared forum to which individual team members could contribute mission, goals, etc. ideas and that would then automatically generate a variety of relevant, potential business names. Hope this makes sense. Again, thanks.

Thanks Gary. Will check them out along with a few others I have found in the interim. Much appreciated! As for "names do not brand," I'm sure many of us could have endless conversations about this. I like what Julian Shapiro writes here about the importance of a name in the building of a brand. Again, thank you!!!
