    Sal,

I work with some painting clients who seem a lot like you -- upscale clients, high quality work and 'premium' pricing.

For the record, the term 'Doctor' suggests (at least to me) something more remedial than the other qualities you've suggested. Nonetheless, I'll offer you one idea that came to me . . .

"(the) Paint Doctor . . . takes the PAIN out of your painting". Or, "we take the PAIN out of painting", and so on.

As one who recently built one home and sold another, I have more than enough experience with painters to last me for awhile ;-). One painter was terrible and my other contractor was dee-lightful.

The 'not-so-good' one . . . the PAIN-ful one . . . was a pain because he didn't supervise his crews, he over promised and under delivered, he failed to meet his own self-imposed deadlines, he became defensive when listening to the client was the better course of action, etc. Hence, the PAIN of a difficult or inept or insoucient contractor is readily experienced. And, all one needs is the 'word-of-mouth' about such a painful experience or, better yet, the anticipation that that's what you'll find . . . and the PAIN is quite real and is desired to be avoided at all costs!

As long as you're committed to using 'doctor' in your name, then PAIN is certainly appropos and the play-on-word 'pain / paint' that it reflects will certainly RE-mind your readers and listeners about you nicely.

Good luck and bless you for caring to be 'high-end'. There's really nothing luxurious about getting anything less than the best!

Trust me . . . I know personally that painting is one area where a quality job is always enjoyed and the price of quality is always fair and equitable for what you get!

    "Painless wall treatments. We promise."

"Your cure for a drab house, inside and out."

    "Precision personality for your walls."

    "Treating your home with care."

"Putting the glow into your home's complexion."

Don't mind Bill, he's just using invisible ink again.

If you DO go with the medical slant, head off the "remedial" thing with:

"Painting services this good require a specialist."

"A quality operation, start to finish."

"For a quality home like YOURS, the Doctor is In-dispensable!"

    IN A LESS SERIOUS VEIN...

(And, for the poor taste/bad pun/hokey combo champ broadcast idea:)
"Our Guarantee Is A CLEAR (SFX: bzzt) Advantage"

How about super dignified and snooty:
"Painters to the Wealthy (and Wise)"

Changing the name is a HUGE decision. Please send me an email to discuss some of pitfalls involved. I can help you with every aspect of the project.

Personally, I think Paint Doctor is more memorable and has a better potential to create a lasting and memorable impression with tagline and ad campaigns.

The possibilities are endless. I strongly advise taking several aspects of your industry, competitors, location, and demographics into consideration before jumping into a free forum "quick fix".

Now, the above suggestions are outstanding, that goes without saying. However, this is your business, your livlihood...

We look forward to hearing from you! (just click on our name).

    Thank You!

    Sal,

I'm not a big fan of taglines unless they explain what makes the company different and better than competitors. If the guarantee is what makes you different and better, then you need a tagline that includes the "guarantee" idea.

The long list of features and benefits is great for your brochure, but the tagline needs to focus on one compelling benefit. If you don't have that kind of benefit, you need to go back to the marketing drawing board (and do without a tagline until you've solved the marketing problem).

    My two cents worth.

Sounds to me like you should go back to what worked 10 years ago and do it again. Why try to reinvent something when you've already paid your dues once.

How much of your business is Maintenance, as opposed to Painting?

Sal's Quality Painting and Maintenance sounds a bit like you are hedging your bets to get some - any - work from a prospect.

Sal's Quality Painting says you're a specialist. That's it. Painting. No unblocking spouting or pest prevention on the side, just Painting.

Of course, if Maintenance is a big part of the business, fuhgeddaboudit... Stick with your existing name.

As an aside to the forum, ;) does PhD stand for "Paint has Dried"? :)

Maybe your launch can include a line to say "We've finished painting the Keystone State, now we're available to paint NC".

I do think your tagline needs to focus on the guarantee. "Great-looking paintwork, your satisfaction guaranteed" works for me. So long as that's still your point-of-difference in your new marketplace, with your new competitors in NC (and nobody has already beaten you to the punch).

OK, enough already, back to work.
