How are small businesses using artificial intelligence tools to create and improve their content? What types of content are they creating with AI? How are they checking the quality of AI-generated content?

To find out, Semrush conducted a survey in 2023 among 2,600 people who work for businesses around the world (76% work for firms with 50 or fewer employees).

Some 67% of respondents say their business is already using AI-powered tools for content marketing and/or SEO.

The most common uses for AI-powered tools are researching content and topic ideas, rewriting and paraphrasing text, and writing content from scratch.

The most common types of content being created with AI-powered tools are blog posts, short social media posts, short articles, short videos, and emails/newsletters.

The most often used methods for prompting AI tools to create content are to build multistep prompts, to write very short and simple individual prompts, and to use a mix of different prompting techniques.

Most respondents (73%) say they review AI-generated content to check the tone and writing style.
