Well, quite frankly, hip-hop marketing created it's own monster. Many record labels and music channels started recruiting their own "mad to order" hip-hop stars based on the overwhelming popularity of the pioneers like The Sugarhill Gang, Grand Master Flash, Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog (Death Row Records), Tu Pac, Ice-T, Ice Cube, EZ-E, etc.

A once "underground" music form becamoe a hot commodity. Therefore, record labels and Mtv jumped on the band wagon, recruiting people like Bobby Brown, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, and many many more. Kids loved it! People loved it! As a result, it became kind of a self-perpetuating entity.

Of course my answer is merely a small sample of the contributors to the industry...there were and still are many many more. Not to mention the "boy" bands, "girl" bands, and those who are considered to be a mix of hip-hop, pop, and rock.

    I hope this helps!
