Can You Think Of A Better Name Than Inside Sales?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
How do you effectively market a team of salespeople that for the most part do their work on the phone? I do not like 'Inside Sales', as that connotes a 2nd tier group of salespeople sometimes. In my experience, the best and brightest salespeople did the majority of their selling on the phone. Plus, when a client sees that they have been relegated to speaking with the 'inside rep', they too feel second rate. Can someone offer more appealing titles than 'Inside Sales Manager', 'Inside Sales Representative' and 'Inside Sales Team'?

    Kathleen raises some good points.

If, Jesse, you must distinguish between your outside team and your indoor reps, how about referring to the indoor people as on-site sales representatives (or on-site sales executives, managers, etc.).

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

I used to work as a "Marketing Associate" in a position that was basically inside sales (our department was called Direct Marketing - this was not done for customer purposes, but so that it would be a little easier to attract candidates to the position).

And as said above, if the position is more customer service than sales, another name could work (like "customer service representative" or similar).

You have raised a number of issues. I'm curious, when you say you are trying to "Market a team of salespeople..'' - do you mean that you selling the services of an an outsourced sales teams to small firms?

If so, the most appropriate title will which direction you are communicating (to the client, to the prospect) and will depend on the level of complexity of your product, your role in the sales cycle for your client, and your target audience. For example, owners of small technical companies would probably want a "product specialist" representing them on the phone. Experienced marketing managers might be more comfortable with a "TSR". Small cash-strapped businesses probably just want "sales".

If you can provide more info, we can provide better advice. In the meantime, my personal favority title for most situations is "Marketing Representative".

Thank you all for your contributions. Here is a little more information. I used the phrase "market a team of salespeople" purely because of the nature of this site. This team of salespeople is one of many teams working for a large publisher. There are also outside sales reps who engage in both onsite and telephone sales. This team that I am inquiring about is 100% on the phone. The phone reps do not support the outside reps, but have their own accounts to whom they would sell advertising, and they have their own budgets. At this point, with the great advice, I am leaning toward Account Managers.

    Jesse,
IF they are supposed to SELL vs manage accounts then I still like anything that says Sales. I've been acct exec, acct manager, national acct manager, global acct manager, vp sales...blah, blah blah. My job was to sell, don't care what you call me. If they're dealing with "lower end" customers, I like to refer to them as CARE (Creative Answers for Real Emergencies>>>or enterprises or whatever) desk.

As far as titles, still like the sales person. Then people know they're being sold.
