Marketing Manager Looking To Move To A Director-level Role - Suggestions?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hello,

I have been a marketing communications professional for 8+ years in MA and am very good at what I do - unfortunately I am becoming concerned at the relative ease with which I can accomplish a certain task - to the point of becoming routine...and I seek to add challenge to my position. As such, I would like to move up the corporate ladder to a director-level position. I've applied for positions and have been numerously turned down as I do not have "director-level experience." Can someone please provide suggestions on how to get to the next step I seek without having the direct experience? Thank you in advance!

Gerardodada's response was similar to what I am going to suggest - see if you can add more responsibilities inside your company.

Even thought you do report to a Director, which could limit your ability to move into a Direct position there, you may be able to pick up some of their responsibilities. This shows you are ready for the position should your manager get promoted/leave. Or if you do leave, you will have had more director-level experiences under your belt.
