What Do You Do For A Living?

Posted by Anonymous on 100 Points
How do you respond when the average person who knows nothing about marketing ,a friend or relative, asks the question 'what do you do for a living'?

If you tell most people that you're into Finance, accounting, sales or management they seem to have have a pretty good idea about what it is that you do for a living.

But if you say you're into marketing they get a confused look on their face and ask 'what is that' or they say 'oh you mean advertising'?

How do you explain to people your profession?

I say we "help our customers make more money by bringing prospects into their system early in the buying cycle".

If they stare at me like I'm an alien, I tell them I'm in advertising!

Confused faces don't bother me because I get to explain to them the difference between advertising and marketing.

Dude you need to hang out with some smarter people. :P

Well, I tell people a am a starving Student that is JUST above the poverty line.

If any body didn't know what marketing was (and I have yet to meet someone that didn't know what it was in at least a more then "its just advertising" way) I would say "I make the product/service available to you when you want it, where you want, how you want, at a price you want it, even if you didn't know you wanted it." Or something close to that anyway.
