Web Design Applications And Job Requirements

Does anyone know the most standard web design tool for a non developer individual?
For example: Frontpage

Do you feel web design is a requirment for a marketing position?

I am the marketing manager for a software company. I have no experience in web design and as part of my responsiblity I have to update and enhance our company website.

We are in a dilema because our existing site was created by a programmer- very technical savy. for me to make changes I need to understand what he did on the back end?
The other thought is to start from scratch using a user friendly/non technical tool? Any recommendations?

Any suggestions, tips or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!

Actually depends on how technical the site needs to be. We represent a company who can walk you through self-building with over 1000 templates, shopping cart, multimedia, guest book, blah, blah, blah. It's a program so it pretty in expensive. I won't post it here, but if you e-mail me (click on my name above or on the right) I'll send you a link.

Again, depending on what you want, you may want to kick in the cash to oursource it vs always being the guy handling questions.

    Your call!

I would say that being a web designer is not always a key requirement. But, it is a good thing to know. And while we are on the subject of good to know. I would say that running MS Publisher is getting to be another "really good to know" program. Now here is the cool news, if you can do publisher, you can do webdesign. (for the most part the skills are transferable)

Thank you all for your excellent input.

Does anyone have any experiences with front page?

I have used Front Page in my previous position and it's fine if you have an established template that only needs minor edits. Now, I am in the same predicament as you, but a web design company developed our website that I am responsible for updating and enhancing. First I used Contribute, but it has limitations. Now, I use Dreamweaver and it has a lot more capabilities (or maybe I'm exposed to more of them) than Front Page. I think it deals with graphics and tables better. You will end up doing html coding, something I thought I'd never be able to do, but sometimes it's easier. There are classes, tutorials and reference books that will help you along the way. It is nice if you can find a class or sit next to someone that can show you the basics first. Good luck.
