So for instance you should be able to use your computer (a business tool) to research on the internet about what other salons are doing. Then use a SWOT analysis (another business tool) to find the salons strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

You will need to do research (primary and/or secondary) to find out the current problems the business has, like do they want more customers? do they get a lot of customers that only come once? do they have a lot of regular customers? and they charging too little or to much? can they increase the number of people they are able to do a day by simply moving some of the chairs around? What is there typical customer like? Is it male/ female, white/black/asian/hispanic/other? have kids? aged 18 -24 or 35-50?

A business tool is just a tool (like a hammer), if you want to nail to bits of wood together together what do you need?

You need a nail, 2 bits of wood, a hammer, something to rest the boards on when hammering, and a person to swing the hammer to hit the nail.

You can use a rubber duck to hammer the nail because it is not the correct tool for you problem.

What you need to do is find the problem your client wants solved, then pick the tools that are needed to fix the problem.
