Develop your senses to observe the customers and use the sales resources: why are the customers coming to our channels (advertising, positioning, advantages, image), why are we wining their preference (advantages, products, services), what kind of products are they buying and why (products, benefits, price, services), which are the principals characteristics of our customers (profile), which participation of their wallet we have (competition, development relations), are they feeling satisfied and happy with us (metrics), what could we do better (planning), and so on.

Great advise from above. Here’s another approach that might help you get started. Take a writing pad and draw a line right down the center. On the right hand side, start listing the relevant things you’ve learned about your customer’s needs and wants in your support role. For example, they may want quicker delivery, or simplified ordering systems whatever, just list all you can think of.

When you’re finished with the right side comments go back and on the left side write a question that might have compelled a customer to make the comment. Eventually, you will have a series of questions and at least one answer for each question. Now expand it. Think of other questions the customer might have that would make your companies’ solution even better. Lastly, with a complete questionnaire in hand, use all means available to you to get customer's answers. This information will be a solid base of data for discussions with your boss and developing your marketing programs.

    Good luck

I'll differ a bit from the folks who posted above. I first started in marketing as 'promotions coordinator', which is likely similar to your marketing coorindator position.

For the short term, one of the key impacts to keep in mind is the coordinator part of your title. Chances are you have experts within your company on the products and customers who you can draw on. And perhaps you have experts on producing marketing programs (either internal or outsourced). Your first job should be to work on becoming the coordinator of all these resources.

Each expert will have their idea on how it should be done, and it will be a challenge to know which direction to go (and which advice to ignore). Assuming the folks are more senior than you, that will all add to the challenge. You need to bring their ideas together and work towards moving the marketing programs forward.

In the long run - what was said above definitely stands. Learning about the customer, learning more about marketing, etc. will allow you to be more effective and grow (get promoted).
