Skills And Competencies Of A Marketing Resume

Hello...

I am 24 from the UK currently working out in New York as an assistant project manager in the technology department of a major Private Bank. This role ands in 3 months and I aim to turn my career towards my preffered field of marketing communications.

I value my creative mind, technological dexterity and am well travelled having experienced the international hospitality industries of the UK, US and Canada. I hold a 4 year bachelors degree in intangible marketing.

I am now putting my first professional resume together. My main problem comes in the skills and competencies section. Can anyone help with what headings and sub skills an employer may desire in todays environment. I have been advised to tailor towards premium/super premium indstries and would also like to aim at environmental preservation industries. I would love a role that would allow international travel and cultural experience.

Can anyone help by suggesting any skills/competencies valued by marketing professionals today as well as suggesting any companies which may tailor for my needs?

    Skills and competencies usually list hard skills, which are skills that can easily be quantified, like languages spoken, computer software you know how to use, etc. I think these are often called. For MarCom positions, these could include various page layout programs and such.

    But many marketing positions look for softer skills, which are not quantifiable. Team work, communication skills, etc. all fall in this category. I haven't found an easy way to show these in a skills section.

    I think you should list your accomplishments. That is what I would look for and have many times. When it comes to soft skills "who knows" until you make a hire.

    I am not sure what areas of Marcom you are interested in but I assume the project management or strategic area. People looking for some in this area will look for results. What have you done to make me want to hire you?

    If this is what you want then it makes no difference if you can use a page making software. However a good understanding of the use of the Internet would be of interest.

    Be honest because if you are not it will come back to you. I once hired a photographer based on his portfolio. After about a month it was obvious that it could not be his. And I was right. I got a call from another photographer telling me he had stolen his portfolio. (before online photos)

    Instead of making a chronological resume make one in which your Educational Qualifications are upfront and then list your Skills and Competencies by projects.

    Creative Exposure & Inputs: Have been personally responsible for coming up with Taglines, brand positioning statement, bodycopy, headlines etc etc for these brands ( depending on exactly what creative inputs you gave; if they were part of some well known campaign- mention it.)

    Technology Competency: Am Adept at handling etc etc. Worked on projects involving etc for XXX orgn.

    Geographical Knowledge: Worked successfully in the competitive international hospitality industries of the UK, US and Canada

    Put in Ability to work in a team as that is most desired in this industry.

    stress your technolgy skills, they will differentiate you in a field where many Marketinig grads stumble and fail.
