Your Favorite Websites For Goofing Off

Posted by Valerie Witt on 500 Points
Hi gang! I was just catching up on some posts over in Daily Fix (MarketingProfs' blog). I enjoyed this one and thought you might too:

Have You Scheduled Your Goofing-Off Time Today?
https://www.mpdailyfix.com/2006/11/have_you_scheduled_your_goofin.html

What are some of your favorite coffee break Websites? Please ESPECIALLY post if they are silly/funny. I'm desperately seeking material for this week's Last Laugh item in our newsletter. Would love to point to THIS discussion. ;)

Here are a few of my favorites:
https://www.gocomics.com/comics/index.phtml - for laughs
https://www.borowitzreport.com - more laughs
https://www.iexplore.com/ - for daydreaming
https://www.ipilot.com - more daydreaming
https://www.ebay.com - for fun (I search for things I never intend to buy)

Best,

Val

That cracks me up that you visit eBay for fun, Val! I'm the same with Amazon. Trouble is, if it's late at night and I've had a glass of wine, I actually do tend to order things that I never intended to buy. (The corvette-red KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer, for one thing.) The mailman must think I'm a total Amazon junkie!

When I need to wind down and turn off the "To Do" list in my head, I go here:
    https://www.websudoku.com

I have a burning compulsion to beat my fastest time on the Evil sudoku puzzles. Addictive. In a geeky kind of way. Perfect for an addiction-prone geek like myself.

Nice thread to continue here, Val!

I like the repository MarketingProfs blogger Scott Baradell created for whacky/odd marketing and biz headlines:

    https://www.spinthicket.com/

https://www.boingboing.net/ is also on my (sorta-) daily list, as is

https://davenetics.com/ because he's wickedly funny and writes great headlines. And finally

https://www.origamiboulder.com/ is still funny after all these years...

Thanks for the temporary levity. Returning nose to grindstone now...

I like to keep up on the latest happenings in the PR world by checking out www.strumpette.com and Hugh is always good for a laugh or thought, www.gapingvoid.com

I like https://www.20q.net/ for playing around and, while it's not always funny (some are sad and some can really make you think), I check out https://www.postsecret.blogspot.com/ every week.

If you've really got time to waste on your hands, https://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/ - I started off reading recaps for one show and now I think I'm reading 4 or 5 a week. I almost enjoy reruns more than original shows because I get a break from my recap addiction!

I'm a crossword nerd, so when I need to escape to a "coffee break website" I look for the best American-style crosswords.

I particularly like the crossword puzzles in (a) The New York Times, (b) The Los Angeles Times, (c) The Washington Post, (d) The Wall Street Journal (Friday only), (e) The Philadelphia Inquirer (Sunday only), (f) The Boston Globe (Sunday only), (g) The New York Sun, and (h) The Houston Chronicle. (There are probably a few others that are equally good, but I can't really justify the time to solve more puzzles than that every day!)

I have found sites that link to all/most of these, so I use them as portals so I don't have to remember all the links myself.

I've even started a blog for crossword crazies (like myself), and you can find the links there if you are so inclined:

    https://www.acrossanddown.com

BTW, any comments on the blog will be most welcome.

Me? Obsessed by crossword puzzles? What gave you that idea?

I screwed up the link in the previous message, so if you get this before Val has a chance to edit it (and delete this message), the correct URL is:

    www.acrossanddown.com

(I think I probably left off the "https://" or something like that.)

    Sorry.

You mean you don't read The Onion on a daily basis? How the heck do you people get your real news??
    www.theonion.com

OK, for the real news, go to the source:
    www.drudgereport.com
    www.instapundit.com

And, for international flavor and updates from the spokesperson I know my brand would want, don't forget:

And I think everyone needs to see Hell Yes by Beck. And it's just as good with the sound off, if you're in the office:

    Hi Val,

My one-and-only stop for laughs: www.televisionwithoutpity.com

I live in Italy and I don't get to see American shows (George Clooney is still on ER . . . just kidding . . . but not really). So I keep up with some shows via the recaps. Plus, those twop writers have cornered the market on sarcasm.

    Have a great day!

Dear Val, what a good idea.

I just wish that I knew what “Goofing Off” was, but I’ll guess!

I’ve got two cartoon’s which I follow wherever I am in the world. Both are from the Daily Telegraph (A UK Quality Broadsheet) whose letters editor is kind enough to print some of the weirder stuff I come up with! The letters are searchable on their web page and there are some hilarious take from readers on even the most serious and boring topics. Here’s one on whether the word “Bollocks” could be used in polite society:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2002/08/13/dt13...

Their daily cartoons, “Alex” and “Matt” are mainstays. Alex, who is about an unscrupulous City Banker, has formed part of my manual for business life:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/Alex/pAlexTemplate.jhtml?pTitle=Alex.Tele...

and Matt has won the cartoonist of the year award more times than he is happy with – he even dropped out one year to give someone else a chance!

    Best wishes

    Hi Val

I couldn’t resist an addendum to my reference to the Daily Telegraph – this one shows the Great British Tendency to Goof-Off En Mass!

On the 18th of November a reader, Bryan Dixon, wrote to say that he was the founder member of “Society of People Who Have Not Seen The Sound of Music and Have No Intention of Doing So” and was probably going to be it’s only member.

Since then, hundreds of readers have written to nominate their societies for things which they HAVEN’T done!

The latest clutch is to be found on:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?menuId=1588&menuItemId=-1&vi...

You can navigate backwards for a week by using the "Yesterday’s letters" link at the bottom of the page to see British Eccentricity at its goofing best!

    Yours sincerely
