Bp Strategy And Core Competences

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Im trying to do an analysis of BP and their strategy, they lay out their strategy quite clear on their website,ie. shareholders, environment, etc.

But I am struggling with what their core competences are as part of a five force and swot analysis because it is such a huge organisation,
I mean is there really a threat of entry? and they dont really have a supplier?.

Any advice/ help is appreciated!

thank you.

    LOL love the handle!

    BP's core competencies are probably:

    Exploration/Drilling
Supply Chain 1 -crude oil to refineries
    Refining
Supply Chain 2 -Distribution of finished products to retailers
Marketing & Branding - have you seen the case study on when they took their brand and made it "green"?

BP do have suppliers. They don't own all their own wells. Ever heard of OPEC? Quite a lot of oil comes from the Gulf. And Venezuela. Do BP buy from there?

There may not be much threat of entry as there is a relatively finite number of competitors, in fact. Shell, Exxon, Caltex, plus a few others... Their real threat to supply is that it might all run out. Search for "Peak Oil" on Google and you'll find out a lot about that argument.

Another threat is Global Warming. BP, like all oil companies, is taking carbon sequestrated in the ground over millions of years, processing it and selling it to users who dump it straight into the atmosphere. See Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" for more info.

    Hope that helps.
