Question

Topic: Career/Training

Ask. Believe. Receive.

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I know MarketingProfs is not a site devoted to career developemnt, and this dilema may seem rather unorthodox, (I have never gotton anywhere by doing things "normal".)

I know there are generous members of MarketingProfs who can help me solve a little quagmire, this community have helped me greatly before and I hope they will again.
I am open and believe in many truths from the bible. "ask and you shall receive".

I have invested/surrendered a will to work in the advertising industry. I am a recent graduate from an Ontario college with an advertising degree, with a passion for the strategic side of the industry. I want nothing more than to give my skills, but I am having troubles finding work. I know no one working in the industry and need help obtaining a job and connections to a future in this great industry.

Is there anyone out there who can give me advice to getting in an agency, finding connections? Do I apply through the internet, apply in person to agencies? Get a head hunter?

Thanks for your compassion and kindness.

    kirkgavinjames,

Ask and it shall be given is a principle that works for those who work it and have faith when asking.

It most definitely happens for those who ask continuously. Having faith means never giving up and believing in what is unseen. The Bible also says see a man who is diligent in his work he shall stand before kings. Remember how you practice diligence shows? Even in the questions you ask.

If you ever want to stand before the Kings of the Marketing industry you must become diligent. A great way to get this opportunity is to interview the Kings but this requires diligence. Most may not see you at first but if you present a good enough reason (and I want tell you the answer to this here) they will open there doors to you. I know because it has happened for me more than you'll ever imagine. Follow these instructions and you too will stand before Kings.

Another thing you should remember is Kings love servants so find one and serve them. Not the way you want to be served...but ***find out*** "HOW they want to be Served".

There is some great advice right here on KHE. Check this out from our website. There's No Quick Fix In Job Hunting.

Your best resource is to call up your professors and ask them what they would do. Never be afraid to ask the person that knows. I learned this from W.Clement Stone a great motivational speaker. Your professors should be excited to offer you how they approached looking for a job when they came out of school. Ask as many of them as you can. This information becomes a very valuable resource of knowledge. You should make it a habit of asking those who instruct, train or mentor you questions like these all the time. Make it easy for them to help you by inviting them to lunch or even breakfast.

I would also advise you to put in your information for a job in the right corner of this screen under search. Read this and let me know if it helps. Thanks. Is there anything else I can do for you?

When a man be gracious and kind it shows he is a true citizen of the world.
Thanks for your much needed advice Deremiah.

I really do not fully understand how to apply diligence in looking for a job in the industry? You mentioned that you have to put out a good reason for people to receive you. Can you elaborate a little? How did you do it and seemingly get such good results?

As for my teachers, I already asked how they go in the industry, most of what they said is not really useful to me because it was twenty or so years ago-and believe me the process has changed, however they did give me some great testimonials that I am using in a cover letter. They seem to have a lot of faith in me and my work so that is a great sign.

    Kirkgavinjames, Your welcome.

Read what I'm saying very carefully and because I believe you are a person who truly wants to understand apply it. Your life is about to change forever but it will happen only if you apply what I am saying.

Don't be just a listener be a doer. All of diligence is in the doing.

The way I did it is to simply BE A SERVANT to everyone I meet. My method is simple but most people struggle with applying the method because most people are only concerned about their own interest. I gave you part of the key before but maybe that is still too vague for you to grasp.

You must begin with your motive if your motive is entirely to help yourself find work in the marketing industry that's not good enough. What's in it for the person who will hire you? Why would someone want you on their team? Are you a team player? Are you a hard worker? Are you willing to go the extra mile? Are you willing to submit yourself to the leadership of Kings? Who do you want to work for? Go there and see if they are hiring? Everybody's hiring great workers! Tell them you would be willing to offer your hard working services to them for free if you have to (in order to get experience). Then you must be prepared to communicate...What are the benefits of why someone would hire you over someone else? Be specific write down everything you can.

Another question to think about is do you really want to work in marketing? And how bad do you want that? Are you passionate about it? Do you wake up looking for the opportunity? Do you go to bed thinking about it? What's your hunger level for it?

When the road of preparation crosses with the road of opportunty. Do you know what that is? That's success.

Are you prepared for your opportunity when opportunity knocks?

It's better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared.

If you can't communicate what you want with passion you'll never get it. Go for it!

(Not to put you on the spot because I truly want you to succeed and the truth is I know you can succeed because greatness is with in you).

To your first question if I were your teacher I would ask a series of questions beginning with do you understand the depth of what the word diligence means? Because in order to apply it you must be clear (totally clear)about what it is.

    READ PROVERBS

You have made reference to being a man of the Bible so my second question would be... Have you read the book of Proverbs? Then I would ask you if your answer is yes have you read it at least 10 times? If you have answered no to the second question I would tell you to do so in order to expand your understanding of the depth of what diligence is. Proverbs will clearly show you what it looks like and what it does not look like.

    APPLY DILIGENCE

MSN dictionary says diligence is persistent effort: persistent and hard-working effort in doing something.

    EXAMINE YOURSELF

Examine how you are looking for work. This will require you writing down how you are doing it. You need to create a journal so you can examine your efforts. Hold to this rule "If it's not down it's not done". If you have not logged it you have not completed the task because anything you can not review in writing to a great extent can not be observed. Once you master this you can now begin to correct the errors of your ways. Log every job opportunity and potential job opportunity. Ask yourself this primary question "What could I have done better?" after each job interview. Then log "what will I do next time".

    APPLY THE LAW OF ASKING

Ask everyone you meet to introduce you to at least one business person who might know someone who is employed in marketing. Contact these people, presentl yourself professionally and respectfully asking them to give you pointers for how they found work? Even though your professors may have worked 20 years ago you can still learn valuble tid bits of knowledge from them.

THE NEVER (YOU SHOULD NEVER FORGET)

(Never underestimate the day of small beginnings)

Winston Churchill said...Never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never give up.

I'm on my way out the door but I'll check back in soon. Send me an email but what's more important than that apply what I have just shared with you. Like Nike "Just Do It! Is there anything else I can do for you?

If I were personally in your situation, and if I didn't mind an unorthodox approach, here is what I would do.

I would not call any advertising agencies, at least, not right away. I would begin by calling directly for marketing communications managers and VPs of marketing at prestigeous regional firms. (A business reference librarian at a regional city or county library can help you build a list). I would tell them that I wanted to work for a great and forward thinking advertising agency, and ask if they know a firm they could personally reccomend.

(I would not begin by calling the biggest accounts. I would begin by calling smaller companies, and would not begin to call the most prestigious firms until I was confident in my approach.)

If they reccomend an agency, I'd ask what they liked most about that agency, make a note of the company name, and write the VP or Marcom Manager a thank you note.

If they ask for a resume, I would send it immediately.

If they cannot reccomend an agency, I'd thank them for their time, and I might gently ask them if they would be interested in hearing the results of my calls to other VPs and Marketing Communications folks.

After I had spent at least a week on the phone, preferably two weeks, and had a minimum of 25 or more VPs and Marketing Communications folks who I knew to be less than satisfied with their current agencies, I would begin to research the companies on the list of great agencies.

I would then call the President or possibly a business development manager of selected agencies, and request a meeting, telling him that his firm was reccomended to me by one of more of his customers (tell him the firm name and contact name) as a great agency. And, without revealing the names of the 25 or more companies, I would tell that Agency president what I had done, and that I had good reason to believe that I could get them introductions to quite a number of regional firms in their target market.

The more VPs and Marketing Communications Managers you have spoken with, the stronger your negotiating position will be.

Within a month, you will have a job in new business development, most likely at a small, aggressive agency. (The big agencies will most likely percieve you as a loose cannon).

After all, it's not what you know, it's who you know.

    Kirkgavinjames,

based on the additional answers from telemoxie and mbarber (which were GREAT!) you've got plenty of work to do. Let us know how it goes? It's time to "Make It Happen". Is there anything else I can do for you?

This is all great advice. Thank you all.

A big part of my strategy in getting into an agency is finding out what works and what doesn't, applying good targeting principles. This means asking questions. And finding out how things operate, doing some digging, doing some primary research if you will. No one would just throw their companies communication pieces blindly into any media-they have to understand what has worked in the past and what doesn't. They must also understand the target and how they operate.

I have spoken with some people about getting a job and they advised me not to e-mail the company in question-it seldomly gets look at, and others said that just going into a company with a resume-no matter what skills you have or how creative it is-the recptionists or who ever takes it will simply throw it out.
Is this the way many companies operate?

What about your company do they review all resumes no matter what form they come in?
