The Real Deal On Marketing Gurus

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Hello all,

I know many times on these forums books and materials by certain gurus like Jay Abraham are recommended. Besides Jay's book "Getting Everything You Can," he has produced many other products including videos, CDs, and reams of printed material. Are materials from gurus like Jay, which can be extremely expensive, really worth it? Do they even work or are they just fluff to sell more of their product? I've seen a trend lately of a lot of these gurus producing titles around infomation marketing which makes me think the products are more fluff. So I guess I'm looking for the real deal on these gurus?

This might be a little convoluted, but indulge me.

I was, at one time, skeptical like you. I hired an advertising guru (Stan Golomb) who became my mentor. My mentor introduced me to the concepts of Jay Abraham. As it turns out, Jay used to work for my mentor's friend Sid Tuchman. All the aforementioned folks assured me Jay was/is a stand up kind of guy.

Well, one day as I was reading Entreprenuer magazine, I came across on of Jay's ads promoting one of his books. Of course, the price was (I thought at the time) steep. The book cost me $400. Of course, Jay offered a no hassle money back guarantee. Since it was guaranteed, and I had a personal relationship with TWO guys who had known Jay on a personal level, I bought. I figured if the book wasn't worth it, I could ask for my money back, and if that didn't work, use the credit card company to cancel the charge.

Well, the book arrived, and I read it cover to cover. I could not put it down. The words seared into my brain, and excited the living dickens out of me so much I could not sleep. By the time I was done, my brain was on fire, and my hat size had increased by a half inch. When I applied what I had read in Jay's book, I DOUBLED the results my marketing had been producing. The 400 bucks I spent on the book, paid a $1,200 dividend within six weeks in additional sales in my drycleaning business.

A year later, I received a envelope in the mail from Jay. It was an incredible offer. I could buy two hours of personal talk time via telephone for two thousand dollars. This time, Jay offered an even stronger guarantee, if I didn't get an idea out of the conversation that paid five times back what the conversation cost me, Jay would refund my money. Well, I picked up the phone, gave Jay my credit card info, and we talked for an hour. During that hour, I picked up so many ideas my hand hurt from scribbling them all down. That same week, I applied one of the ideas Jay gave me in my business and it paid out an immediate $2,000 in new sales. This same idea then brought six new clients that brought in an additional 1,000 to 3,000 each PER MONTH. All in all, just one idea Jay gave me in the conversation generated an additional $80,000 in sales the first year, and an additional $120,000 in sales the second year. I never asked Jay to refund my money, and I never asked for the second hour (but I bet Jay would still honor the request if I asked, even though it's been 16 years sinced we spoke).

Jay Abraham is the real deal. Yes, there have been many since him who have tried to repackage or regurgitate Jay's stuff as their own...but it's just not the same.

I hear ya that some of the books and materials Jay sells is expensive. I've never really stopped to think what I've paid out for the library of Jay's stuff I have, but I bet it's well over 10 grand. If you brought over a bottle of Gin and Tonic, I'd let you sit and read it with me, and we'd talk and talk and talk about how we could use what we read, but I guess a flight up here to Regina would be a little heavy on a student's pockt too. Second best way to get your hands on classic material for low prices would be on eBay. Just be sure to buy the real stuff, there are still a few folks faking Jay's materiala and trying to pass it off as original. As for my collection, I'm leaving it in my will for my kids to learn from.
