Making The Jump From The Music Industy

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
After 10 years in the music industry I am looking to make a career move. Downsizing has become a yearly event and it is starting to take its toll. In my current role, I manage field staff of 300 independent contractors who set up displays and promotions with local retailers,. During my tenure, my department has played an essential role in the development of many successful projects. I am currently living in Los Angeles and I would like to relocate to the Boston area. I enjoy working on the road and think I would excel at a field marketing or sales job (possibly pharmaceutical sales). Can anyone provide insight into jobs that can be done remotely or as part of a field staff? If anyone here has made the jump from the music industry to another field, how did you do it?

I never known anyone who has tried to get out of the music industry, everyone I have ever met wants to get in to the music industry. So this is a first.

This may be obvious advice but sales skills can transfer to any other product or service...so if you have those skills and are good at what you do...you should be able to sell anything.

I think Advertising or radio sales would be good jobs to transfer into because of the similar nature of the industries being the creative aspects. Just a thought though.

Get your resume together and emphasise your selling and servicing and relationship sides of your past positions. Take all emphasis away from what you were selling and put the focus on how you sold it, what you made you manager how well organized and strategic you were in your thinking and abilities.

Thank you very much. The music industry is not as fun as it used to be.
