Consumer Vulnerability And Its Use In Marketing

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am writing a dissertation at the moment and am struggling to find information on the factors that affect consumer vulnerability. I want to find out which factors make consumers feel vulnerable and whether this is created by marketing, or if marketers take advantage of these vulnerabilities. For example - the marketing of exensive sports gear to children. Parents from lower social classes still feel the pressure to buy these clothes for their children so that they 'fit in' to the world (that marketing has created). However they are vulnerable in that they cannot necessarily afford such items.

The most obvious factor would be "fear".

Insurance, Banks and National Governments are really good at using "fear" as a mechanism of vulnerability. You mentioned helmets (which is a safety product), similar to insurance. I see a pattern emerging, do you?

There are a number of basic human motives: self-preservation, love, fear, sex, desire for life after death, anger, hate, desire for recognition/self-expression, freedom for mind & body, and wealth.

In some cases, the motives are "human nature". Marketing/Advertising can point them out or get you fixated about them.
