    Hi rjc0629,

The purpose of preparing a marketing plan:

  • It forces you to assess what's going on in your marketplace and how it affects your business.
  • It provides a benchmark for later measurement.
  • It helps you establish, direct and coordinate your marketing efforts.
  • Just the process of of preparing a marketing plan guides you in developing a successful marketing strategy.

    Hi rjc0629,

In one view, the purpose of marketing strategy is to provide leverage for making or closing sales (in a sense great marketing strategy turns your sales people into order takers).

For example, Mazda had a marketing strategy to develop an older British-like sports cars only with contemporary styling, features and reliability at an affordable price – the Mazda Miata.

The strategy worked. People lined up at dealer showrooms to buy the Miata. The purpose of the strategy was to create a great deal of demand for a car. The non-Mazda dealers were stuck with less exciting cars and had to work very hard to sell them because they didn’t have as successful of a marketing strategy.

    Hope this helps
