Hi,
I am getting almost graduating with a Bachelor in Pol sci, and I just realized of worthless a BA is in today's job market, Thus, I want to do a master in public relations ( I took a great amount of Journalism and Com classes), But Is a PR master really worth it ?,Or would I be better off getting a job in that field and trying to make my way up, I am currently looking for a job but can’t get any PR assistant position for now. I mainly have entry-level marketing positions offers, which is discouraging ( do not want to have to sell printers on the "field" to people who do not want to be solicitated anyway) Should I go for this entry-level marketing thing with promises of great career mobility and put up with the field part of it for a while, or just wait a little more to find that PR job, and get my master. Now, would you advise me to shoot for a big international company, or should I start in a smaller company. I am so lost I just don’t know what to do and where to go… Help please!

    Hi,

First of all a BA degree is not worthless - the head of sponsorship for Vodacom has a BA and no Honours degree! secondly, you have to start somewhere if you don't have any experience. Some employers feel experience is more relevant than anything else - but you still need the degree. Finally, if you just completed your studies that means that you are roughly about 21 year old so you still have a lot of time left before you have to make it big. Do the cappy jobs and get the experience and in ten years you will never look back!

    Good luck

Start at the bottom, take an entry level PR job and do it well. Find a company that will help pay for your MBA. Even with a degree of sorts in PR you are still going to get offered entry level jobs.

Start at the bottom, take an entry level PR job and do it well. Find a company that will help pay for your MBA if that is something you still want to pursue. Even with a degree of sorts in PR you are still going to get offered entry level jobs. You will learn more in the first 6 mos of actual PR work than you will in school anyway. Nothing beats actually doin'.

A BA is absolutely NOT worthless. Almost everyone, regardless of degree, starts at the bottom in not the best job. That called paying dues.

Take an entry level job and work hard and figure things out.

People with no college degree have a really hard time going from entry level to a higher level position. I would never hire someone without a college degree as I believe sticking to something for 4-years says something about someone.

Do not go to graduate school until you have some work experience, even entry level so you know what is out there.
