Whether or not it will just be a degree depends on you. There are extremely successful people who didn't even finish high school, but there are many more who work at McDonalds. This whole world revolves around ambition and if you have it you'll be able to get where you want to go no matter what formal training you have. If you struggle in that area then formal education may be the only route. I am not badmouthing formal education in any way shape or form, but simply stating that what you get out of it or self education depends on you. BTW I started in IT and have been in Marketing for 9 years now.

MBAs were originally developed for people that don't have business backgrounds. For example, an Engineer type or professionals who are trying to move up but have no understanding of managerial principles. I personally don't hire people with MBAs and no experience. In-fact proven experience is the greatest attribute a person can have in business.

There use to be a rule that you had to have x number of years of experience before you could qualify to enter an MBA program, but after the whole 9-11 thing and decline in international enrollments the schools became desperate and wanted to boost enrollment by any measure and that included dropping entrance criteria for their programs. The Universities did the students and business community a great disservice by doing this and they know this.
