Video Editing Job In Media Co. How??

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi.

What is the best and quickest steps I can take to get a job (being hired on) as a Video Editor or doing video work for a media company and work from home regarding (Music Concerts/Events/Entertainment...)?

I would like to know the step by step method (a specific plan) I should take to get this job before the end of the year, What questions to ask a potential company on the phone, Who I should talk to, what software I must know, how to ask the company about working from home.

I studied Film in University (various aspects such as lighting, Scrnwriting, Directing etc) as well as Film Editing and Sound Editing-manual. I lack experience in software. I have great computer skills, learn quickly, willing to volunteer in exchange for experience. I video edit using imovie and have experience with Cubase. Also I will have a Demo ready as soon as I get familiar with Final Cut Pro next month as well as other video related software.

Please let me know what ideas you have or experience to help me reach my goal. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Chris55

You will need a portfolio with examples of your work. You may need to do some pro-bono work to start to acquire some samples to show off to potential employers.

Why bother working for someone if you have that experieince. I sell my video animations on multiple stock video sites. The money is good and you can make thousands of dollars off one 30 second loop.

I do editing for a large Ad Agency in NYC. They have a pool of freelancers that they draw from. Freelancers are usually picked based on their "reel" of previous work. Turnover here is low since they tend to use the same folks and pay well.

They do train up editors from within. These folks start out as assistants and work their way up the food chain. My advice - Get any job anywhere they are doing what you want to do and work up the chain. 95% of editors I know followed this route.

Anyone can edit with a few classes. Few can interact with clients and meet the demands of a professional video suite without paying some dues.

Work From Home: Even if you specialize in a particular area of post production, you will need to be up on formats, specs, deliverables, client interaction, etc. The editors I know doing work from home are the top pros in their field and have a reputation for excellence.

Event - look for work as a PA (production assistant) and get to know the players, their needs and where you can slot in and provide a service.

It all comes down to trust. What will it take for a production company or live event company to trust you enough to pay you to deliver excellent work, on a tight schedule, with multiple revisions? Usually it takes a great reel and the ability to communicate effectively and professionally. These come through experience. My .02 after 20 years of doing it.
