Telecomm-vendor: Project Mgmnt Vs Marketing

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
Hello Everyone!

I work for a Telecomm. equipment vendor, I've been technical support engineer for last 3 years, doing maintenance as well as engineering tasks, building Telecomm. networks 'GSM/UMTS/CDMA/NGN', and I have a relatively high rank as an enginner inside the company.am 31 years old now :)

Now am planning to take the next step in my career, and there are two possibilities for me:
1- Project Manager in Technical Support Department.
2- Product Line Manager 'Core Network' in Marketing/Sales Department.

my long-term career plan (5-10 years) is to become a CTO/CEO in some Telecomm. operator.

Am a bit confused about which path to adapt, I wish that you kindly share your ideas regarding this issue.

Am sorry that my question is not that precise, but am trying to initiate a discussion that may help me define my concerns in a 'sharper way'.

Appreciating your time and efforts, thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Ehab

You already have Engineering credentials. In order to maximize your carreer potential, you need to get some sales/marketing experience.

I agree with Frank. Also, my gut says that a product line manager would carry more responsibility than a PM in technical support.

A sales/marketing job will probably be more difficult, though, given your current experience -- so be ready to learn a lot from your team and on your own... it will take a lot of time.
