Etic And Emic Elements Of Culture

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Can someone please tell me some specific etic and emic elements of culture? I know that etic means using external criteria to describe and compare behavior of different cultures and emic tries to describe behavior of a particular culture, but what are some examples of the elements? I'm writing a paper on the golf ball product category and need to describe how etic and emic elements influence how golf balls are positioned in different markets.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Golf in some countries is regarded as a game of class (U.S.A.) -- a game that is reserved for high society. In other places the game is enjoyed by everyone (New Zealand, Australia). The golf ball is often marketed on performance, packaging, price and brand. It seems like in the U.S. the ball is marketed on price -- the perceived value is higher with price because golf is seen as a game of luxury, class and style. Look at how many private country clubs exist around the domain of golf in the U.S. alone. I think where the "wealthy" stigma is present so to will be the marketing of the golf ball as a class statement. I think these elements are less present in other places where golf in enjoyed by all.
