Why Are So Many Email List Brokers Located In Fl?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Is there some reason why Florida is home to so many email list brokers? My inner conspiracy theorist suspects there are some lax laws that let them get away with shady business practices or something. Anyone know the real deal?

Along those lines, does anyone know if unsubscribing to spam emails may actually get you on more lists (because they know you're reading the email)?

Unsubscribing from spam definitely gets you more email. I conducted my own experiment with several new email accounts. I used the age old honey pot test. I set up a bogus email account with my dogs name on it. I then used the email in 5 guest books in various websites.

Within 3 weeks I started getting mail. Within 2 months I was getting 100 emails a day. Each of which I immediately blocked from all my accounts.
so if any of the readers of this journal find themselves marketing to a certain Molly Hurtte you are wasting money.

Whenever you acknowledge that you are a real email address to spamers, you put yourself out their for advertisement. Even if you unsubscribe, you are telling them that you exist. only ignoring decreases your spam and future contact with spam. It's like their circle of life.

..And Flordia is a good location for realitors due to people retiring, events, relaxing -just enjoying a sense of paradise. Basically Fl screams money. Scams are everywhere. Prob more there b/c of the demand.

I am not familiar with any different laws in Fla. The weather is nicer there than in some places and that may be the appeal to a market that can be done anywhere.

As for unsubscribing, I wouldn't click on anything from a Viagra or Cheap Watch spam, but most reputable companies will be honest about it. The CAN SPAM act says you have to honor the recipient's request to be removed within I think a couple weeks, but I don't recall for sure. Our happens immediately, as I'm sure most others do as well.

CAN SPAM can be a big deal, but I think it only has any power within the US and not in China or any other country.

That's my take on the matter at least.

Nothing different in Florida but the weather. But there are plenty of brokers in NY as well. There are scammers everywhere. If you want to deal with direct marketing list pros, visit the NMOA. www.nmoa.org and deal with members.

I'm a list broker located in Florida, so I had a good laugh at your question. I'm unaware of any legal benefits, but I'm also not into shady business practices! The list business originated in NYC, and many of the original list company founders relocated to Florida in the 80s/90s. As a result quite a few offshoot businesses have formed...that's my theory.

As for responding to spam, don't do it unless the offer is coming from a legitimate source, in which case you can click the opt out link. Per can spam requirements the mailer/list renter must then remove your name from all future campaigns. The list owner should also collect opt outs for future suppression.

    Hello,

I am a list broker in New York.

There are a lot of list companies in FL. More in NY and CA.

FL seems to be a hot bed for boiler room operations!!

Data is data. Junk in junk out. Always ask for the source of the data. How did they opt-in, is it a subscriber file etc..

Subscriber files have a better response rate.

Do not opt-out unless you know the source of the email!!

    Thank you

I have never been able to figure out the Florida list broker conundrum. That's so funny, It seems like there are thousands of them and they all live in Florida.

I would suggest staying away from list brokers and stick with the interactive agencies who specialize in email list rental. The big guys can find you the best lists that have been proven to work time and time again. The agency's are usually able to get the lists cheaper than the brokers anyhow. Here is a list of some of the top email marketing agency's that my firm has used in the past:

    Avenue A/Razor Fish - https://www.avenuea-razorfish.com/
    OgilvyInteractive - https://www.ogilvy.com/o_interactive/
    Viralytics Media - https://www.ViralyticsMedia.com
    Rapp Collins Worldwide - https://www.rappcollins.com/
