Moonlighting In B2c Marketing

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Dear All,

I am a marketing professional with predominantly B2B experience in the Hi-Tech and Telecoms sectors. I am looking to gain more B2C experience in my sectors of expertise as well as other industries.

I am particularly interested in marketing strategy, international marketing, new media, new product conceptualization and development, as well as culture-specific positioning and communication.

I already have extensive international experience and speak several languages, and was thinking of moonlighting in the B2C space for a while to gain some substantial experience.

Would anyone be able to give me any advice on how to find moonlighting/freelance opportunities? Please let me know if you require more info.

Many thanks in advance for any pointers!

    Some options for gaining experience:

    1) Do your homework: read publications and network with B2C professionals and absorb as much information about the segment as possible. It is much easier for an employer to take a chance on you and the skills you can transfer to his/her company if you have a working understanding of the challenges, strategies in this space.

    2) Engage in volunteer / pro-bono work with a small business, non-profit or community organization.

    3) Join marketing associations and volunteer your skill in any consumer oriented committees.

    4) Telecom / Hi-tech are both great industries with many companies that target B2B and B2C client bases. Working for a company that targets both segments represents a great opportunity for you. You essentially get yourself hired based on your B2B experienced, build RELATIONSHIPS with managers/peers in the B2C department(s) and then seek opportunities in those departments. With numbers 1-3 above taken care of, it is much easier for an B2C manager to take a chance on you.

Thank you both for the helpful tips. Yes, the ultimate goal is to become a marketing consultant, preferably for startups or growing businesses that are looking to expand into new markets. I was hoping to be able to get some experience on the side assisting consultants who are already active in this space.

Not sure if I'll have the patience to go look for another B2B job then start building relationships then transfer etc. since the ultimate goal is to work for myself, but I will check out any project opportunities and do my research. Unfortunately, none of my relatives have any small businesses I could volunteer for :-(

    Thanks again!
