Becoming A Professor

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
While I am interested in having a career in adveritising in an ad agency or large corporation, I do believe my passion is in teaching marketing. I am currently enrolled in a bachelor of commerce program. What are some steps to take toward becoming a marketing professor? What should my highest level of education be? As well, what are some good schools to complete graduate programs? (FYI: places like Harvard are completely out of my price range).

Any relevant advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

You will need at least a master's degree to teach marketing at the college level and then you will most likely need to be on tract for a doctorate. Some community colleges will accept teachers with master's level education and experience in the field. Most large public university's and private colleges require PhD's. I currently have an MBA with concentration in marketing and I have seen some postings locally (Lehigh Valley, PA) which require MBA plus professional experience to teach but these are mostly at the community college level. Some of our local state universities accept this min. education but you have to show that you are enrolled in a doctoral program and will be completing your PhD within a certain time period.

There are some excellent schools which offer PhD programs with partial or full time programs and partially or completely online. One is NOVA southeastern in Fort Lauderdale, I think there is one called Walden U. in Phoenix. These are only 2 that I have checked into to possibly pursue my doctorate. You should note that some doctoral programs require professional experience in your field as a requirement.

So you might want to finish your bachelor's, get a job in the field and start working on your MBA or master's in marketing or management with a focus on working on a doctorate within 10 yrs.

Just a note, a few area universities are desperate for female profs in management in the MBA programs. They would be more likely to take master's level education and waive the doctoral requirement at least temporarily or maybe permanently. Last semester I was taught by someone who had just finished their MBA and she was very good.

    Hope this helps!

Apparently a Masters degree is not good enough...
You will need a Ph.D. in order to become a full time professor in any university that has a bit of a good name...
But the most important thing, make sure you mix practical experience with the "stuff" that universities love, mostly research.
You have to understand that there are marketing professors out there who never spent a day of their life in either ad agency or marketing departments of businesses.
Don't become one of those, the students want and appreciate the practical material.
Good luck from a "professor" and a practicing professional.
