Training Ideas For Young Marketing Team

Posted by susanv on 100 Points
Hi everyone,

Next month I am holding a marketing summit for my marketing team, which consists of just under 10 employees specializing in different functional roles(web design/branding, partnerships, events, lead gen, public relations, etc.) Most of the team is relatively new to marketing (most are right out of school) so training/workshops will be very helpful for them.

The summit will consist of team building activities, interactive brainstorming sessions, etc. I am hoping to either bring in a speaker and/or find some various topics to chat through in a different way so that everyone is learning something beneficial to their particular role. If a 3rd party comes in I would prefer to not break the bank.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to find resources on this type of thing? We're based in NJ with easy access to NYC if there are local resources.

Thanks much!
Susan

With such a young staff, I recommend setting up a plan to have each of them lead a small aspect of the meeting and charge each one with bringing in one really neat idea to share with the group.

It will help them grow as professionals and gives you an opportunity to look at natural leadership skills which some of the probably have

Here's one game idea: Divide the group in half, with clear roles for web, print, PR, etc.). Assign both groups the same marketing project (on paper only) for an hour. The catch is that the person assigned the role must be someone who doesn't already specialize in that role. This will allow the specialists to train the non-specialists (creating relationship), and the non-specialists to understand more about the specialist's needs/challenges. When one group presents, allow everyone to ask the presenter why they made those choices, etc. Then everyone is learning from everyone else.

    Hi Susan,

I smiled when I saw your posting as my firm was recently hired to build this same type of summit for a newly formed, global marketing team in a financial services business. We specialize in connecting employees to their brand, regardless of their role. Our techniques are fun and participants leave with action plans. You can learn more and contact me at: www.theinvolvementpractice.com.

Looking forward to discussing your summit with you.

    Sincerely,

    Susan,

I'd make sure that everyone is signed up for a full membership in marketingprofs. This allows you to watch an unlimited number of webinars at no charge.

Once you've chosen the most important topics to cover e.g. email marketing, SEO or whatever, you can select specific webinars to watch as a team.

You can pause the webinars to hold discussions on specific points or just watch all the way through and discuss how the ideas might be relevant to your situation at the end.

The really nice aspect of this is that you get to preview everything. You'll know what content is going to be delivered and how interesting it will be. Can't always say the same thing about a live guest speaker.

    All the best!
