Firstly you mention a web portal, then you mention a web site?

Please be clear about your goals and what your web site/portal is ll about.

There are so many different manners to bring traffic but the truth is that here is no easy or cheap method. If there was, everyone would be using it already :))

Firstly look at your geographic coverage, is it national, international or just state / city wide.

Once you have decided on the catchment area that you want to reach, then look at the audience segmentation that you want to hit. Clearly it is real estate but what kind? ALL kinds? Luxury condos? low income repo's ??

Once you have decided on your focus, then you can start to play with your key words for the SEO and for paid search (assuming you have some budget to spend)

There are affiliate networks, banner exchange networks, Google Content, blogs and forums where you can start to add posts etc with links back to your site. Don't forget Video sites, Youtube, Kyte, Googlevideo even works well.

Once you have exhausted all the online options, start to look at cost effective localised options. Tie up with bricks and mortar real estate agents maybe. Put some posters in their stores or give out postcards with your message and web address at real estate meetings and conferences.

Marketing options go on and on and on, yo just have to have a good handle first on what your product is all about and who your target market is. Don't try to be all things to all people (at least in the beginning) but find a speciality or an expertise that differenciates your site (or is it a portal) from everyone else.

If you have some budget you might want to consider Google AdWords. It is a quick way to bring in traffic but generally you want a goal of what you want people to do when they get to your site, too.
