Mass Emailing Software? Joomla?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hello, I am currently working with a startup clothing company geared towards the gen-x & gen-y target market ie action sports market. While working at my previous marketing position with a hard rock/ metal band I built up a heafty mailing list of 120k+. The bands website was on a platform and I could customize email templates and send out newsletters to all 120k of the subscribed list. Developing the clothing lines website I considered using the same platform as the bands site to utilize the email functions but decided instead to go with joomla for the ease of use and customization. I have looked into 3rd party email service providers such as constant contact as well as a few others but I have found them to be rather expensive, especially in a startup environment. Does anyone know of any software that would allow me to send. Newsletters and updates to my users directly from our servers so all we are paying for is the bandwith?

Phplist is open source and decent app.

There are a lot of email marketing systems that plug into Joomla too.

But, your ISP or host may limit your outgoing emails per hour. Vaires from web host to web host so check with yours.

GoDaddy is pretty good as far as hosts go. My only beef with GoDaddy is the MySQL database is a remote call and sometimes the Database server is down while the web server is up.

I could recommend many other hosting companies, but for the sake of disclosure, I have to admit I'm in the web hosting business as well.

Its hard to find a web host with wide open servers. Spam is a serious issue. Better to stick within the server restrictions as it helps keep you off spam lists and blacklists.

Shop around and look at mywebhosting.com for comparisons.

I too have used phplist. You can import lists into it (export out of joomla). I use bluehost as a host, and they have a limit of 500 emails an hour through your account. You can set up phplist to be sure to not violate this.

    Dear Star,

Companies like Constant Contact, etc do a lot more than just send mailings. They also focus on deliverability, keeping track of ISP black/white lists etc. Though as you noted, they can get expensive and perhaps are not the best choice for a startup environment.

For your specific requirements, a software I have used and can recommend is Dada Mail. The free version of the software allows you a maximum of 15,000 subscribers, and gives you the ability to customize your emails, etc. The pro version removes all limits and had many feature additions like Click thru tracking, bounce notifications, etc.

The url is https://dadamailproject.com/ and I suggest you give it a run. Easy to setup and has all the features you need.

    Hope this helps.

    Aaron,

You may find my post about integrating phplist with Joomla useful if it's your desired option.

If you're looking for a way to synch newsletter subscribers with Joomla registered users there's a bridge available (see outgoing link in the comments section).
