Advice On How To Get Published?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi all,

I have recently applied (& failed) for an Assistant lecturer's position in Marketing. I failed in part due to my lack of publications (i.e. I haven't any publications).

I have 6 years marketing experience + a first class honours Business & Marketing degree.
I currently don't have anything written or research topics or contacts in the publishing world.

So I am looking for advice for:
1) identifying a suitable topic
2) and actually getting published.

Any help or advice would be more than welcome.

    Hi

I am Anurag from India and I am working as an Assistant Prof so I think I can understand this as i have gone through such a phase

See, what I will suggest is that instead of looking for some topic (a mistake which many of us initially make), first identify a specific area of interest. Marketing is a wide domain and you will have to identify some areas like advertising or consumer behaviour etc.

then in that 'area of interest' look for what is going on that is, what are the latest happenings and try to zero in on the topic.

They say that if you publish in one particular area then your expertise gets established gradually, so, choosing the area of interest is also 'strategic' and not a 'tactical' way to go ahead.

Let me tell you one more thing that people practice. Suppose if you are not able to identify the area of interest or think it is too early to decide on that, then you can look for a few academicians (the senior the better) and check about their working papers (thanks to Internet these things are traceable) and request them to take you as a part of the project and this way not only you will get publications along with good names but you will also learn the process.

I have not mentioned about the process of publication as this will require a hell lot of things to be done which come largely by practice/experience/guidance/training.

In case you are interested we can work together. My mail id is [Email address deleted by staff]
    hope this is useful

    all the best!

You'll want to find a topic that is your "sweet spot" - something that you're passionate (or at least interested) in AND is something that others care about also. What is important is that your opinion needs to me more than "yes, I agree with the common wisdom" - it needs to either enhance the current thinking or show why the common thinking is wrong. Ideally, you don't want just your opinion - you need data that proves your thesis. And if you have a topic is that's really juicy, you can publish your thoughts from many different angles: as it applies to corporations, small business, target markets, niches, etc.

You wrote, "I have 6 years marketing experience + a first class honours Business & Marketing degree. "

What is your field of experience? Was it interesting to you? Was there a part of your experience that drew you in more than the others, so that you could write about your experience and share that with the marketing community? Do you have an area of expertise that you can illuminate for students?

    sir

you are having a 6 years experience in marketing.( but you didnot mention your designation). so you come across lot of difficulties for sales in the market( personal selling or any form ). So you can give ideas for - how to sell effectively in the goods in market- in your article. Lot of magazines are welcoming new and vibrant current topics and topics like mativational selling or smart selling.

so first select you area of interest. read more. collect some relevant materials. use net effectively to collect information and review of literature. then proceed. before sending your article to press check it with others to correct. I know lot fo publications are rejected due to poor english and spelling mistakes. care on it.

    all the best.
