Giving Away Free Downloads

Posted by nat.colley on 25 Points
I always see the advice to give away something for free in exchange for contact info. What I do not see is a mechanism for doing so. My current hosted site will let me post all kinds of files, but they are all there free for the asking, no registration required. I've found shopping carts but that's overkill. I just want a registration form and when they fill it out they get my freebie. Seems easy, so where is it?

That's all you do...create a form and the provide the free information either on the thank-you page or by link in the thank-you email.

If you're not handy with this stuff, try Googling "free Web forms." Seems like there are a few choices there.

    Good luck!

If your site were based on a content management system like Joomla this would be built in.
The other option is to have a web form that people must full in. Once it is filled in it will take them to the download page, or even better it can email them a download link that way they don't get the link unless they provide a working email address. I have used a form script called form processor pro that has worked well.

    Inbox:
That was just painfully too easy, so naturally when I checked the answer is my host won't allow that. FYI, I am on a free host but there are a lot of limitations, this being one. We have a contact form that gets emailed to us, so I could then send them an email link back, but clearly this is something people expect to be immediate and automated. Maybe an autoresponder?

    Mike:
Clearly I need to move to another host, because I can't follow your suggestion either. I'm open to ideas about that, although technically that's another question. I'll look around the forum to see if that's been answered already, if not, I may post about that.

    Thanks to both of you
