Master's In Advertising / Ms Imc Where?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hello all,
I am MBA Grad. and working for a national Agency in Pune (MH, India). After working for 2.5 yrs in advertising field I decided to apply for MS IMC (Integrated Marketing Communications) / MS Advertising / MS Creative Brand Management @ US Universities.

I need your help!!! Pls suggest,
1. What will be the job opportunities in USA and (if I return back) in India, after completing Master’s Advertising / IMC program?

2. Where should I go for Master’s Study in Advertising?

Which are the top ranked universities in USA for Masters Advertising / IMC program?

3. I want to become Marketing Communications Manager of a reputed company in future (may be in 3-4 yrs). Is it a better decision to study right now or should I continue my ad agency job and then switch to client side when ever I get a chance?

Pls reply. Awaiting your valuable recommendation.

:-) thanQ very much in advance.

Ur’s avinash

    My thoughts.

In the US, people get a MBA or some other business related master degree and go to work. It is rare to see someone get a second business related masters degree. Some people go on for a PhD instead, but PhD in business generally are used so one can teach at a University. So the only benefit I would see of getting a Masters in the US is that it would remove any doubts about the quality of the MBA you have from India (there are high quality Universities in India, but many Americans don't know which they are, so may give less value to your degree than they would one from the US).

MarCom Mangers in the US rarely have Masters degrees. Bachelor degrees are the norm. You may want to check the classified ads for current jobs and see what is being asked for (here is a list for Silicon Valley https://sfbay.craigslist.org/search/mar?query=marketing+communications+mana...)

    Dear Peter,

thank you: very much for your reply. I'm looking for MASTER'S in Advertising/IMC ONLY and not PhD.

I have done MBA with Marketing major but I don't think I studied much about Advertising or Media related subjects. I am looking at MS as a mastery of my field and to get a job in related field in USA.

You mentioned: "It is rare to see someone get a second business related masters degree"....and...."MarCom Mangers in the US rarely have Masters degrees. Bachelor degrees are the norm"
My Que 1: Are there any good job prospects for those who have 2 business related master degrees & an experience of relative field? (than those who have only one business related masters)

My Que 2: Don't you think candidates who have master's in IMC/Advertising will be preferred for MarCom Managers post than candidates with Bachelors degrees?

I saw the jobs posted on the link. Thank you once again!

Also pls tell me Where should I go for Master’s Study in Advertising/IMC? which university / college in USA.

    PLS REPLY

My experience is that most companies will hire someone to work in a individual contributor position in marketing communications and then promote that person into the marketing communication manager position. The exception is when a person already has marketing communications manager experience, where they then will be hired in to the position.

As such, it may be easier route to go for a marketing communications non-management position first and look to get promoted within 2 years into management.

I suspect the greatest challenge you will have is related to getting a work visa for the States. They are in high demand, and hard to get even when the economy is good.
