Project Pricing Advice

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I've just been asked to submit a proposal for marketing consulting work in the areas of branding, pr, advertising, and strategy development. I usually price based on the project or ask for a monthly retainer with a set number of hours. This project is a little different. Five non-profit organizations are working together for a joint marketing venture. They have received a grant of $30,000 total for their marketing budget. My role would be to oversee the marketing joint venture and all its initiatives. I'm going to develop a marketing plan and all five will implement the same strategies. They will have unified marketing collateral and website.

I estimated 30-45 days to complete the collateral pieces and website. After that it will be less work. I don't really know how many hours the project will take because I'm working with 5 different organizations to create one unified brand and message.

I'm not sure if I should provide one flat price for my services plus any third party fees (web design, printing, etc), or bill a monthly retainer for a set number of months.

If you had this type of project, how would you price?

If it was me, I would charge 25% of the annual salary for a Dir of Marketing for a company the size of the 5 combined charities.

You'll likely make enough contacts there to cover any other costs. But, I'm partial to (some) non-profits.

Since you are working with many organizations is is hard to judge. I would probably give a fixed bid proposal. I guess the questions is how bad to you want this? You will have to take a little bit of risk that this may be more difficult than it seems and take longer.

Figure out how many hours you think it will take, pad that and set it at a good hourly rate. (this is internal math, not for the clients). Use that number to give a bid and get to work.

Most people are not excited about open ended bids. I also think that in the present economy any paying work is a good thing.
