College Grad Seeking Advice With Marketing Career

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Greetings! Before delving into my question, please allow me to properly introduce myself and situation.

I graduated from a state university in May with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. My major was Marketing Management and I graduated with cum laude honors. While in college I worked at a gas station (5 years total there), opened an Internet business on eBay where I earned the silver Powerseller rating, had a sales internship, and was the president of a student organization. I always like to keep busy and I'm very ambitious and motivated.

After graduating I found myself confused as to what direction to take. I expanded my business, and worked as a consultant for 2 companies. The consulting roles were temporary, and last month my vendor for my business went bankrupt. I'm now unemployed and find myself needing some advice from marketing professionals.

I'm passionate about marketing because I love the creativity and customer psychology aspects of marketing. My personality is such that I'm creative, driven, results oriented, good at project management, excel at researching, and love psychology.

I'm having a tough time finding a job though because I'm really unfocused on a specific career path. I would like to be a marketing professor and entrepreneur, but I'm also open to working for a company helping with marketing. I can't seem to narrow my search down to a specific job within marketing. There are so many! Advertising, brand management, Internet marketing, market research, etc. All seem interesting to me, but thats likely my problem. Which areas are promising today with my personality and abilities?

Any advice and assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

So it sounds like you have a great interest in all things marketing. Perhaps there are many different marketing jobs that would suit you.

Are there any products or services that you are personally excited about. Do you have any hobbies that you really enjoy. Perhaps you should be looking for a marketing job related to one of your passions in life. If you want to put many of your skills to the test look for a job in a smaller company where you would get the chance to wear many hats.

Finding a job with a company that markets something your are passionate about can be very beneficial as you can be passionate about both the product and the tasks you perform there.

    Mike
