I would look into the causes of the current crisis and see if marketing was port of it (I am sure you will find it is not). Then if people are saying you are making the wrong choice or otherwise blaming marketing for the current problems, you will then have ammunition to fight back (and perhaps provide your own conclusions to them about who is to blame).

Although it's hard to see through the dark cloud, somehow I have faith that "this too shall pass." We'll look back in 5 or 10 years and wonder why we were so worried about everything.

And, as Peter points out, this isn't a problem caused by -- or unique to -- marketing. If you were thinking of becoming an investment banker or mortgage lender you'd have more reason to worry.

My suggestion is to keep your eye on the ball: follow your passion and focus on the things you can do to set yourself up for success. Don't squander your energies on things beyond your control or wallow in the Chicken-Little fears that others would lay on you.

Folks today are very concerned that increasing the top line. This creates more opportunities for successful marketers.

In addition, technology is changing rapidly, which should give an advantage to recent graduates who hopefully are familiar with these new technologies and their applications and marketing.
