Have something on the website that people are searching for.
Contribute ideas to others' websites.
Don't forget that traffic really isn't your goal - conversions (to something you're offering) are. Therefore, once people get to your site - how long do they stick around and/or order from you? Focus on conversions before building traffic.

You might want to consider Search Engine Optimization (SEO) but stay with *only* white hat techniques as if the search engines discover you using tricks, they will penalize you. Avoid that situation.

There are lots online resources on SEO as well as books. You should not have trouble finding information on how to do this.
