Opinion About Medill

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
I am admitted to the Medill-IMC program for Fall 2009.
I am very interested to know from folks out here about the school/program from their own perspectives. I have few questions in my mind.

1) The course fee is very high - 1,10,000 $ for 15 months. Is it okay to take the plunge?
2) I don't see any information about the career service there. Do you know the job prospects for Medill IMC grads?

Please advise. I need your valuable inputs.

There's an active blog by current students (https://insideimc.wordpress.com/tag/medill/), associated Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Vitamin-IMC/59717402493), and a LinkedIn group (https://www.linkedin.com/groupInvitation?groupID=46071&sharedKey=7D66447EAA...). Any of these would be natural places to ask your questions.

Also, from 2008 a useful similar question to yours:

I've recruited there many years, have hired many graduates directly, and continue to work with many of them as a freelancer. They are, to a person, smart and knowledgeable about marketing and can step right in to most any situation. Very hands on.

The fee is high and the term is short because the school is top-notch, renowned, and focused solely on marketing comms. It limits your options when you come out - so make sure you want to be in marketing comms when you graduate. You will be 25% under salary from typical MBAs, but in a good economy (which we should have 15 mos. from now) you will almost be guaranteed a job. If you can't get a job with a Medill degree, then there is probably something wrong with you ;)

If you can get in, i can't see what you have to lose as long as you are certain of your future career aspirations. However, if you are doing this on a lark, then of course you need other criteria to evaluate it, which are personal to you.

    Best of luck.

    Wonderful

Its so nice to get many opinions and I value each one of them greatly.
I am full of hope after reading Kevin.horne's post. Thank you! Always serves well from a recruiter's perspective.
I checked with the career service where I believe that the mean salary is 70,000$. My question is will the figure go up because I have five years of professional experience prior to joining Medill or I have to start from ground zero post Medill?

I have some dated connections at the Medill School and know that the reputation is superb. I used to consult on projects with one of the professors there (and also in the Kellogg School of Business), and my impression is that the school and the program are the best. You can hardly go wrong there.

Having said that, I'm not the one considering going there. It has to be right for YOU. What are your alternatives? Does the school fit with your goals? Have they responded candidly to your questions and requests for information? Do you have some reservations? If so, dig within yourself to see what they are and whether they trace to something at the school or in you.

Good luck. Let us know what you decide. When would you start?

    thank you mgoodman.

Medill augurs wonderfully well for my career aspirations.
for me, everything about Medill in terms of course structure, world class faculty strength & industry connections are just phenomenal except 'tuition' fees.

For an international student (from India), I find the program cost of 1,10,000 $ toooo high. I am doing lot of groundwork on this. I have concerns on ROI part. Generally, they have this summer residency program (both domestic & international) where I can offset the program cost for that quarter ( around 20,000 $ ). Because of the rough economy, the sponsoring employers will not be ready to provide funding. thats one problem.

the 2nd problem I believe is the not-so-active career service. they have some 3 to 5 folks doing an OK job. The previous batch did well. The current students are finding it a little difficult. Having said that, there is no guarantee of job placements even if one goes to Wharton/Kellogg/Harvard for that matter. But, this worries me because of the 1,10,000 $ hole.

The program starts on September 21.

I am weighing all the pros/cons. I seek to get suggestions from you.

    Please help me here.
