Tiffany, it's not likely that there is any reliable information on the size of the handmade jewelry industry because it is so fractionated and largely an "under the radar" industry. Further, much of it is sold one-to-one for cash and not reported in any formal way.

Typically we don't find good estimates for industries with zillions of mom-and-pop businesses and no real industry association.

Better to ask yourself what you would do with the information if you could get it. You may be able to rephrase the question to something that can be answered with more confidence and reliability.

If we came back with a number like $50 million instead of $500 million, or even $5 billion, would it make a difference to your plans? If not, then why bother with trying to guesstimate the number?

Besides, the industry exists all over the world, and in many places there really is no way to even begin to estimate the size of the industry. No taxes, no records, no interest in sharing the information with anyone.

This isn't like trying to estimate crude oil production or automobile sales.

If the business plan is just for you, then it may not be so important to have these kinds of industry growth figures. And if it's for prospective investors, you might be better off showing them websites for a few relevant competitors. You can then move on to a SWOT, your positioning, marketing strategy, etc., which will probably be more meaningful anyway.
