Branding You

Posted by Anonymous on 40 Points
I am currently looking for a position in a Marketing department for a company, or in Account Management at an Ad agency or in Brand Management. I have had experience in Marketing but I have never worked at an Ad agency or in Brand Management.

I have read a lot of articles, job hunting articles stating that one must brand themselves in this economy. That your name has to be everywhere (related to your field). Write articles, write a biog, create a website, make a name for yourself. If you just graduated from college with not much experience under your belt, how do you make a name for yourself. At this point I am not an expert in a certain area so it feels a little uncomfortable giving people advice or stating my opinions because I don't have to much experience or knowledge in a certain area. What is the best way to differentiate yourself and brand yourself?

    Just get started ...

If you don't have an expertise, then what area of branding would you like to research and learn about? You can be an expert "at finding great content" on a specific area of practice, write your own comments and make the great writings of others available to your readers on a wordpress.com blog.

After providing useful posts, you can register with the appropriate social media networking sites to gain more readership. Slowly write more original stuff and use less of what others write. It takes time, dedication and patience, but you can carve out your personal branding niche.

    Good luck,

    Dear Steve,

Thank you for your posting on my question. It was very helpful and gave me a little confidence in going ahead and creating my own blog. Do know of any examples of people doing this that would be a good example to take a look at?

If you don't mind me asking, what type of work you do? Are you in branding? I just wanted to get a sense of what its like working in this area.

    Thanks again,
    Ss15

As far as creating a blog I would recommend that you start by looking at other experts and commenting on them. Look on adage for articles, look on alltop.com for ideas. By critiquing you show your strategic and creative side when analyzing what others are saying. It shows your ability...but deflects your lack of experience. Be sure to comment on the other blog posts you find and provide a link "trackback" to your own blog. That way you can start "trying" to drive people to your blog and get comments from others which will help legitimize YOUR blog.
