What Is A "banner" In The Retail World?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am interested in applying for a job, but am a bit confused. It is in the grocery/pharmacy business and it references "banners".

"We have a diversified portfolio of regional retail banners, locally managed and branded, spanning the nation, coast-to-coast and border-to-border."

So, what is a banner? Originally, I thought they were referencing banner marketing on the web, but that is clearly not the case. Any help would be appreciated!!

It appears to mean physical "signage" (as in signs that are in retail stores around the country).

    Dear Jjonetowatch,

OK. The company this position is for is Supervalu, a large super market supply company.

The "banners" they're referring to are the names of super market chains they supply.

Therefore, each "banner" is an individual store brand, with each "banner" being a household name in the region or state the store holds its market share in.

Many of these store chains hold market and top of mind share that ranks as either #1 or #2 in their area, and each "banner" chain is better known to its customers as: ACME®, ALBERTSONS®, bigg's®, BRISTOL FARMS®, CUB®, FARM FRESH®, HORNBACHER'S®, JEWEL-OSCO®, SHAW'S/STAR MARKET®, SHOP ‘N SAVE® and SHOPPERS®.

Established in 1870, Supervalu deals with over 2,000 retail outlets
across the United States and is one of the nation's leading grocery retail companies, dealing with grocery retail and supply, and pharmacy supply.

Here's a link to the Wikipedia page for Supervalu:

I hope this helps you. Good luck with your application.
