Next Step For My Career?

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I have been working in a small company in the past two years doing everything from email marketing, brochure design, newsletter witting, social media participation, Google ads, website creation and maintenance...etc. 6 months ago, the sales manager got layoff, which means now I am the only sales and marketing person for the entire company. I have increased company's overall sales by 20% in the last 6 months compare to the same period last year on top of my marketing activities. My company pays me pretty close to what an average Marketing Coordinator should be paid (around 45k. no salary increase after taken on the sales role), but I am wondering if I should consider working for a larger corporation which might promise me a career path? I manage no one expect for myself and unless I have some management experience, it will be hard for me to become a marketing manager one day, right? With two years of marketing experience, I might only be able to apply for the Marketing Coordinator position, which wont' be a big salary jump for me. What should I do?

This is a great question and a situation that is all too common.

I wrote a post recently suggesting that now is a great time to be looking for a new job. https://tinyurl.com/mgoe6o

In your situation, I would look at whether or not you have the metrics you need to build a strong resume. You've already mentioned one. If you can tell a solid story around that you have a basis for finding your next opportunity.

I wouldn't limit my thinking to the coordinator role. Nothing wrong with accepting another coordinator role. But, given the way you describe your background you might find something at that next level.

    Good luck!

These are very good questions. Taking a marketing position with a large corporation is an excellent path to take especially if the corporation is known for great branding, e.g. P&G, Apple and the like.

But perhaps this is the right time to plan your career. What industries are you interested in b2c, b2b? Verticals? marketing focus such as social media, product development, channel marketing etc?

Once you understand your career goals, you can begin to develop your very own personal brand. Here's a short article on career branding positioning strategy.

    hope this helps,

The company I work for right now is in the software B2B industry. Since I have only been exposed to B2B marketing, it is hard to say at this point if that's the only area I am interested. Due to the small budget we have, I have only been able to work on email marketing, pay-per-click marketing and some social media marketing like Facebook and SlideShare. I am very interested in internet marketing, but I haven't had too much success with it. Our clients don't like to join our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/Edmonton/Go-Big-Event-Simple-Onlin...) to call themselves a "fan" of us. We only have 4 fan so far and two of them are company employees. I usually update company news or promotions on our Facebook page if I can and gets a few traffic to our website from our Facebook once in a while but no new sales leads.

The three slideshare presentations that I have created on SlideShare (https://www.slideshare.net/DaphneChen) received 300-750 views and some very positive feedback but no sales lead from it either. We have talked about direct mail campaign internally but somehow just been placed on hold for the moment. I feel I am interested in internet marketing but don't mind being a generalist in a large corporation either so that I can work with other marketing areas such as direct mail, advertising and more.
