Name Fo Online Ebook, Software And Video Store

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi All, I am scratching my head to name my new online ebook, video and software store. The majority of the usual dot com names are already taken (www.ebooksonline.com etc). Should I perhaps go with something unusual like www.purplepepper.com (not available) and face the risk that it is not descriptive of the site or should I stick to a traditional name? Does anyone have any ideas for names (both traditional and more funky)Thanks!

Thank you Mike, WMMA & Michael, So the keywords in your domain name is crucial (according to Mike), however WMMA is of the opinion that it does not matter what you call yourself especially if your marketing is top notch. Right? Names of Apple comes to mind where it does not really say what products they produce.

What about hyphens in your domain name as Michael suggested? Will that make a difference?

Perhaps I should give you some more background. I'm in the process of setting up an e-commerce site specializing in high end sports memorabilia focussed specifically on the South African Market. The domain name will be ww.thepitch.co.za (development site can be viewed at https://www.voloper.com/projects/opensites3/francois/The_Pitch_1153/about.a...
There are still many problems on the development site (spelling, graphics too big etc). I don't have experience in online marketing and therefor decided to buy a package at www.resellers-heaven.com in order to teach me the ins and outs of online marketing. I don't have a business plan for the ebooks site but I have a comprehensive BP for www.thepitch.co.za (Learning online marketing is part of this BP). The skills I obtain will then be implemented in thepitch whilst having fun and perhaps making a bit of money. That is where my original question stems from (Online ebooks site). However, I also see the value of focussing a resellers heaven type of product in the African market especially when the new cables are complete along the entire west and east coasts of Africa (which will kickstart the internet African revolution)

    Now that was a mouthful!

Thanks from Sunny South Africa! Congratulations to the US making it to the Confed Cup Final!

    Hello Brian,

I am an experienced SEM/SEO Consultant and Domainer. I can tell you that it all boils down to your intended goals with the domain name that you will buy.

Q: Does the the keyword being present in your domain matter? Yes it does, but is it that imporant - ABSOLUTELY NO, but again it depends.

Look at Amazon.com - do you think it matters that the "online book seller" or related keyword is not present in the URL? Obviously not.

You have to address the issue of branding. Nowadays, you will find that a lot of premium domains are gone, so trying to find good generic domains is difficult, BUT get creative and also think about your branding.

I own over 2200 domains and have sold domains for over $50,000 (i.e. MachineryZone.com), and each domain has unique goals. The scope of domain name based SEO is too large to cover here, but lets just say that you want a name that:

    - is easy to remember
    - easy to pronounce and spell
    - catchy or atttractive - whatever that means to your audience.

Online stores very rarely targeting one specific keyword. So if you buy the domain for one keyword - what happens with the other keywords?.

Even if you get a domain with the keyword in it - if the keyword is "short tail" and very popular - just by getting a domain name with the keyword in it, will not take you to the top.

For your niche and industry forget about that for now. (My personal advice) Hey - if you can find a catchy name with your target keyword on it - then by all means by it. But domain named based SEO/SEM is only effective for long tail less competitive keywords like:

Keyword: "Speech Therapist in Atlanta Georgia"
SpeechTherapistinAtlantaGeorgia.com will tend to rank well and fast for that keyword, but short tail competitive keyword is much more difficult and you will need to establish your site as an authority.

You can buy other cheap domains later to rank for specific keywords and then drive the traffic to your primary site (I do that), but for your primary site, get a good NAME and focus on creating good products, content and link building.
