Trouble Getting Responses While Conducting Survey

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am a MBA student and currently doing a group project for which we need to conduct a market survey. The survey intends to identify the views of parents ( with children of age 5-15) and their criteria for buying additional educational products like films, audio cd, games, graphic novels, etc in Singapore. We have been going to malls and schools to collect the data. However, we get just 2 or 3 responses out of the 30-40 parents we meet. Most of them are busy or just not interested. Online survey is difficult as we do not have many email ids of many parents. What should we do to get more responses?

RESPONSES

I would post the URL for an online survey here and maybe members can help you if they have children 5-15 years old! (Not sure if that is allowed on this site, so you will need to check first) - if you want a more global view and that is ok, then I would try that.

I would also find friends/families that have children 5-15 - neighbors etc (your own neighborhoods they may feel more obligated to be surveyed to help you).

I hope those ideas help - good luck!!

Thanks Bill for your response. Due to lack of space I couldn't mention that I am an outsider in Singapore and staying in the college hostel. Besides I need a response from Singaporean parents only.

    Thanks Techgirl and Conrad!

We will try and approach the school principal or maybe the parent-teacher association and ask for help.

We will also try pick up numbers from yellow pages and cold call people.

Hoping to get more responses this way.

You're not giving the respondents a reason WHY they should help you? People are busy, and you (a stranger) are asking them to take time away from their day to help you. The WHY could be: a gift, discount, a chance to win something, etc.

Also - your appearance and/or script may need improving. First impressions (visually and orally) matter a lot, especially when talking to strangers.

Thanks Jay Hamilton-Roth. I will keep appearance and script thing in mind. I do agree that first visual impressions make a difference.
