I would figure out what the $ amount is per sale and what it is for the lifetime value of their customer (you may have to do some research here). If you cannot find that out, you can use an example. The bottom line if marketing efforts gets x new customers and resulting referrals (another result) then you can prove the value of marketing. The fact is they really need marketing even to handle the basics like brochures etc. The more you can find out about the business and use examples, the more they will understand. Note that you also want to be careful, since marketing momentum takes time and you don't want to have to earn twice your salary back in 1 month when no one else in the company has to justify their existence like that. You really want to end up with a company that believes in marketing too, since you need to be able to test, make mistakes, as well as successes. Otherwise, they will give up on marketing (at least a dedicated source) and you will be looking for another job!
    Hope this helps.

Companies that don't appropriate much money to marketing and advertising are constantly raiding that money to pay for other things. I can't think of a succesful company that doesn't have a marketing department.
