    Dear Paul,

There’s some disparity here between: (a) your experience (in sales) and your plan to work in marketing, and (b), the bullet points of your question.

I may be alone in this, but to my ear each bullet point screams “Me! Me! Me!”.

Yet ... you’re in sales. As in, selling things to people.

So in a nutshell, your view of marketing (and, it would seem, sales) is upside down.

Think about it: sales and marketing are about offering customers solutions. They are not about you and how you can progress.

Let me clarify this point: It’s not about you, you, you, it’s about your customer, the benefits she gains, the values he receives, and the solutions they discover as a result of having done business with your company.

It’s about people seeing a practical, tangible, life changing result because they invested their time, money, and perception in your overall product, service, or goods and the promises these things make.

    Which companies?

IBM. Schwan’s. Proctor and Gamble. Google. Amazon. Zappos. Apple. Microsoft. Verizon. Trump. AIG. HSBC.

    Take your pick.

But remember: marketing is about offering the customer the best solution for their problem in a way that is significant for them.

Get this right and you’ll never be out of work.

Ignore it and you’ll bounce from one job to another.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

    Hi Gary,

Thanks for your advice. Although I do agree that marketing & sales is truly about adding value to the lives of others, I'd just like to clarify that my objective was really to find out where I could best start and grow as a marketer. It was a career question rather than a business question.

Needless to say, customers/consumers will always be on top of my list, be it in Sales or Marketing.

    -Paul
