The University of Fairfax has had numerous dissertation topics that been successful. The first step in a successful dissertation, however, is determining your research site. In the U.S. 75% of doctoral students drop out after they finish all of their course work. They never finish their dissertation. The following are the keys to a successful dissertation topic:
1. Obtain a research site with a written commitment from the "site owner" for access to data for about 6 to nine months. (If you can't find a site, your school should help you. The University of Fairfax finds research sites for its students.

2. Carefully define the data you can collect at your research site.

3. Pick a topic area that is both supported by the data available, AND, very importantly, is an area in which you have experience.

4. Pick a dissertation committee that will support the topic for at least 18 months and will essentially coach you. (All University dissertation faculty are in effect "Dissertation Coaches".)
