Changing Careers

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I have been in the IT industry for years and I am tired of it. I have taken marketing couses and if I apply I know I at least have an associates in Marketing. I have operated my own business and have done very well in sales, but I do not have a clue what I could possibly write in an initial cover letter that would sway someone to get me in for an interview. I am great at selling my self in person, but a little leary of doing the same thing in writing when I do not have the job experience.

any Suggestions?

First, you've just stated you've owned your own biz for years and have been good at it. Leverage that experience-- you are selling yourself short. You built your own successful biz and you are here to do the same for others.

2nd, do what you do best. Writing letters is too passive. Get out from behind the desk and sell yourself-- as you have in your prior career.

Direct sales has worked for you in the past-- repeat the success.

I also caught on your having run your own business, and was wondering why you were looking to go back to working for someone. Not something that many entrepreneurs can do (or would want to do).

But, if that is what you want, you need to focus on the position you are after. Once you set what you are after, take your skills, education, and experiences and talk about how they match what the company is looking for. If you are going after a particular position that was posted, this is easy, as there should be a posting that lists required and desired attributes of a successful candidate. If you are just going in general, then you should choose the area within marketing which you want to work at, and determine what would be needed for that.

If there are multiple areas within marketing you are interested in, you could do this multiple times. But, for each letter you send, focus only on one area. Companies like to see focus and desire for the particular position they are looking to fill.

Marketing today is 75% Internet Marketing - understanding technology is key to marketing. You shouldn't have a problem bridging the two areas.

Find something you love--then find a way to make money at it. If that;s going to be working for someone else, so be it. Tell 'em AND Sell 'em.
