Naming A New Merchandise And Promos Company.

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I'm thinking of starting a home business selling promtotional products and merchandise (logos on tees, mugs, pens, etc) to companies, bands, and teams. I'd like the business to have a green/environmentally sustainable bent to it, I plan to rep and sell products that are organic or enviro friendly.

That being said I don't want it to come off as a hippy company or not equally cost effective to dealing with a traditional swag vendor. I'll also sell tradional products too.'So I'm trying to think of a name. I don't mind it being more hip than descriptive. I decided I really liked the name 'Rethreads' but it is taken by a similar company.

I'd love any suggestions you can come up with. Im better at coming up with the image/logo than naming things and most of my recent ideas have been cheesy. Thx for the help. :) kk+

It's tempting to create a hip name versus descriptive. If you do so, I suggest a tagline that describes what you do.

A couple of names off the top of my head:

    Hoopla

    Ballyhoo

    Hoopla Green

    Planet Hoopla

    Planet Ballyhoo

combine these with a tagline related to promotional items to get the message across.

    I hope this helps!

Kris, you have an amazing website and CV. I'm kind of surprised you're looking at the promotional products biz, but then, I don't know much about that industry.

Normally when someone requests help with a name here on the KHE forum, my brain clicks into gear and generates at least one or two decent suggestions. (We never DO get to find out whether or not those ideas have legs, though.)

Today I'm going to be unconventional and maybe a bit controversial, though. It's because I've got domain names on my mind... and in my attic. Several that I've decided to unload, in fact. Three of them might have potential for your business identity.

If you want to know which I'm thinking of, just click on my name and you can email me offline. Thanks!

    Interesting website...

    Environmentally sustainable promotional products?

Agree with Jett - a hip name needs an explano-tagline

    - Eco Mondo Promo
    - Eco Promise
    - EcoProMondo (has a nice etymological rhythm to it)

    (Tagline might be something like
"Promotional Products for a better/cleaner/happier world" or "Every Man, Every Woman, Every World")

    Hope these musings help.

Kris, promo products might not be a bad choice, but I wonder if going green is really the right way to differentiate.

Everything about YOU points toward hip, cool, smart, unconventional, cutting edge, etc.

Your posse will probably look to you for hip, cool, smart, unconventional, cutting edge promotional products! Not your run-of-da-mill engraved pens, tote bags and crappy stress balls, if you know what I mean.

Your niche could be discovering (or inventing) the most amazing and unique promo pieces imaginable. Green's okay, too, but... yawn! Even though I love this Earth as much as the next gal (heck, with a company name like BirdNest, I simply MUST be chummy with the environment, right?), I'm not convinced that the Sustainable angle will win you enthusiastic customers.

Hey, Kris, regardless of my lecturing about green or otherwise...

I thought of a biz name that I like, and lo and behold, the domain registries say that the .com is wide open, too. What about Treehand?

Haven't checked the US Trademark database (uspto.gov), but we "experts" rarely go THAT far for our forum buddies, no matter how much we love 'em.

Nothing else has come to me yet, Kris. You can look at my funky domain name list if you want (www.bootnik.com/domains.htm).

You're right to let your heart lead you on this -- if you don't LOVE it, the business name won't work.

If I think of anything after you close this question, I can still post ideas for you here. Or maybe I'll just email you directly. My head is kind of swimming with two web development projects right now, though...

Okay, Kris, I was thinking about some of the words in your list, plus some everyday words that I just plain like. I won't bother with any more explanation for how I arrived at these names! I did check the domain name registry, though, and these fine identities are available in .com sizes, limited time offer, operators are standing by...

    Fanaticon
    Iconition
    Iconiply
    IconJuice
    IronMeme
    MemeSong
    GoodIron
    FreshIron
    CrackerJuice

Yes, those last three ARE pretty weird, but I'm always fond of meaningless, memorable, unique and fun word combos. Maybe I should start a sideline business naming bands or kid's cartoons.
