Let's say your web site is listed in all the popular search engines (it's pretty easy to do, such as: https://www.google.com/addurl/, https://www.evrsoft.com/fastsubmit/, etc.). But you need to think about the next step: someone types in a search string and your site is listed, along with 100,000 other web based gift stores. Unless your site is on the first page or so, you're unlikely to get many visitors.

You could pay for traffic using PPC (to start with). But again, once people arrive you need to ensure that you've got what they're looking for.

So, start with your goal. Who exactly are you trying to sell to? What makes your site better/different from the rest? Why should someone trust what you're selling? Then work backwards, getting the right people to see your site, and then getting lots of the right people to see your site.

Don't worry so much about search engine listings. If you get the word out about the site, search engines will list you. One of the criteria that helps with both search engines and promotion is to post on as many blogs as possible. Always work in a link to your site. Google loves sites that have inbound links. Provide free information of value to site visitors. Visit some of the free content sites on the web and download a few articles. put them into a pdf and make it a free download. Make sure it has a link to your site. By doing these and a few more, my site is visited by google every 11 minutes!
